Social & Living Skills Programs

Spend time with friends, learn new skills, and try things you have never done before — with people your own age, and support alongside you where you want it.

Spend time with friends, learn new skills, and try things you have never done before — with people your own age, and support alongside you where you want it.

Our programs run as workshops and outings built around what members actually want to do. Some are about the practical skills of everyday life. Others are about getting out into the community. Most people do some of both.

Who this might suit

  • People who have finished school and want structure in their week
  • People building everyday skills — cooking, money, travel, technology
  • People who would like to meet others who share their interests
  • Families looking for a regular weekday program they can plan around

We support people across Hornsby and Sydney’s north. If you’re not sure whether this is the right program, ask us — it’s a five-minute conversation, not a commitment.

Everyday living skills

Achievements that look small from the outside can be enormous steps forward. We work to the goal you set, at the pace that suits you, and we keep it enjoyable — a skill practised once in a workshop is not a skill until it is used in real life.

Workshops cover:

  • Organisation skills
  • Cooking
  • Money management
  • Personal care skills
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Taking part in social outings
  • Travel training

Getting out into the community

Being stuck at home is its own kind of hard, and for a lot of people even an ordinary errand takes planning and support. Our team finds and coordinates the outings, and goes along.

Typical activities include social events and sports, special-interest shows and expos, parks and gardens, dinner with friends and family, beach visits, art galleries and museums, art and performing-arts classes, swimming pools, markets, coach and train trips, grocery and clothes shopping, cafés and restaurants, and local festivals and shows.

What members are working on

The program runs across five strands, so people can follow what interests them rather than sit through what does not: money and budgeting, performing arts, sports and fitness, technology and games, and music and singing.

Programs run Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. The current calendar lists what is on each day — recent workshops have included budgeting and cooking, visual arts, drama and storytelling, gym and fitness sessions, volunteering, gardening, and travel training.

How funding works

Social and living skills programs are usually funded through an NDIS plan — most often from the Core Supports budget, and sometimes from Capacity Building where the goal is building a particular skill. In practice these programs are funded under both the Core Supports and Capacity Building budgets, against assistance with daily life at home, in the community, in education and at work; improved daily living skills; improved relationships; and increased social and community participation.

Your plan can be NDIA managed, plan managed, or self managed — or a combination. Many people choose to be self- or plan-managed because it gives the most flexibility over which providers they use. If you’d like help choosing a plan manager, we can point you in the right direction.

Common questions

What services does Morhaven provide?

Four things: Support Workers for one-to-one support at home and in the community; Social & Living Skills Programs covering cooking, budgeting, travel training and more; Weekend & Friday Night Socials; and Respite, Supported Holiday Stays & STA.

What age groups do you support?

Children, teenagers and adults. Our Weekend & Friday Night Socials are designed for young adults aged 16–35; support workers, living skills programs and respite are available across age groups.

What areas do you cover?

Our centre is at Suite 508/88-90 George Street, Hornsby, and we support people across Sydney’s north — including Wahroonga, Asquith, Berowra and Pennant Hills. Supported holidays and short-term accommodation also run further afield, including Amaroo Homestead at Pindimar.

Nearby but not on that list? Give us a call — we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help.

Do you accept NDIA-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants?

There are three ways an NDIS plan can be managed — by the NDIA, by a plan manager, or by you or your nominee — and many people use a combination.

Tell us how your plan is managed when you get in touch and we’ll confirm straight away how we can work with you. If you’d like help choosing a plan manager, we can point you in the right direction.

Do you currently have availability?

Currently accepting enquiries for selected services. Contact our team to check availability.

Availability moves week to week and differs by service, so the quickest answer is a direct one: call 1800 168 468, or send a quick referral and we’ll come back to you on capacity.

Can I meet a support worker before services begin?

We match members with staff who share their interests and values, not simply whoever is available — so getting the right person matters to us as much as it does to you. Ask us about meeting them first when we talk through your supports.

If a match isn’t working once supports have started, tell us and we’ll change it.

How does a support coordinator make a referral?

Use the referral forms. The quick referral takes about two minutes and is enough to check availability; the detailed referral captures the full picture when you’re ready to proceed. You can also call 1800 168 468 and we’ll take the referral over the phone.

Am I eligible for the NDIS?

Eligibility is decided by the NDIA, not by Morhaven or any other provider. Broadly, it applies to people aged 7 to 65 who live in Australia, are an Australian resident, and usually need support from another person — or use special equipment — because of a permanent and significant disability. Children aged 0–6 are supported through Early Childhood Early Intervention instead.

To start, make an Access Request with the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or read the official criteria at ndis.gov.au. Happy to talk it through with you first — just ask.
